Super Cup Massi resumes with most international edition of Barcelona City Trophy

The Barcelona International City Trophy has a long history on the UCI international calendar. This event has been committed to the best mountain biking in the exceptional surroundings offered by the city of Barcelona for many years. It is a fine demonstration of the fact that this world tourism capital knows how to and is fully capable of organising top-level outdoor sports events, even in a category as closely associated with the mountains as cross country. The area around Montjuic mountain is a hidden treasure that is left unexplored by many from the long list of tourist attractions in the city. Here it is possible to create an XC route to befit the World Cup on which there is no shortage of anything: demanding ascents, technical descents and the most spectacular views of Barcelona.

A few days before the World Cup returns to Europe, the Super Cup Massi in Barcelona will be a key event for many bikers and an important test for knowing who has reached this stage of the season in good shape.

The work undertaken in recent years to internationalise the event has been highly successful. This edition of the Barcelona City Trophy, which continues the Super Cup Massi that launched in Banyoles, will have more riders than ever in its history: a two-times Olympic champion, Julien Absalon (Absolute Absalon); the current Olympic bronze-winner, Carlos Coloma (Primaflor-Mondraker-Rotor); and bikers who know what it’s like to stand on the World Cup podium, such as Ondrej Cink (Primaflor-Mondraker-Rotor), Daniel McConnell (Primaflor-Mondraker-Rotor), Victor Koretzky (KMC-Ekoï-SR Suntour), Jordan Sarrou (KMC-Ekoï-SR Suntour), David Valero (MMR) and Pablo Rodríguez (MMR). These riders will spearhead a race bringing the best XCO in the world to Barcelona.

Ondrej Cink has earned his place as favourite to win. He climbed into the top five of the Bundesliga last week and, following a period in professional road cycling in 2017, he seems to have readapted to XCO. After him, the field is wide open. It will be an exciting race full of options in the fight for a podium finish. Both David Valero and Pablo Rodríguez will arrive in good form to the race, and Carlos Coloma has also demonstrated good progress on his path to the next World Cups. They will be the big Spanish names to watch. We shouldn’t forget Carlos Coloma, the winner in Banyoles and defender of the Super Cup Massi lead. Julien Absalon is always a favourite at any race and will have to see whether the hay fever problems he usually suffers at this time of year affect him or not in Barcelona.

The race, which also forms part of the International Catalan Cup Biking Point, will be a trial by fire for those bikers focusing on this championship. Ever Alejandro Gómez (Olympia Factory Cycling) is the current leader and Darío Gasco (Coluer-Ixcor) arrives in great form after his double in Vall de Lord. They will be able to measure themselves up against the best riders on the planet during this race.

The women’s category looks like it will be an ‘all against Primaflor-Mondraker-Rotor’. The Spanish team comprises an exceptional list of riders, such as the young Rocío del Alba and María Rodríguez, as well as the Australian Rebecca McConnell. Claudia Galicia (Megamo), Magda Duran (Biking Point) and Sandra Santanyes (Olympia Factory Cycling) will be the local podium-seekers in this UCI C1 race.

As usual, Ocisport has organised a morning of three competitions that will allow riders to race as comfortably as possible while letting the crowds follow the events as clearly as possible. The action starts at 09:00 with the first race (men’s and women’s youth, women’s junior, women’s 30/40 masters and men’s 40/50/60 masters) followed by the race at 10:40 (women’s elite, women’s under-23, men’s junior and men’s 30 masters) to end with the main event (men’s elite and under-23) at 12:30.

We will have to wait and see the table standings after Barcelona and how the riders will come to the event in Girona for the Sea Otter Europe, another key event.

Registration for the race is open until Thursday at
